If you live and breathe creativity, the creative process is both a battlefield and a playground, where you wrestle with ideas and urge them to come to life. The process is a complex journey through a maze of ideas, where creativity and chaos coexist, and each in turn opens up a new world of possibilities.
But what precisely is this method to this madness? Is there a way to harness the unrestrained pathways of creativity?
The Spark
It usually starts with a spark, a sliver of an idea that awakens the imagination.
Perhaps it’s just a quick idea scribbled down on a napkin at lunch, or it may be a dream that won’t go away in the morning. I find that it usually happens at the strangest moments, like that “aha” moment while taking a shower. But sometimes it’s slow and brooding, nothing resembling a spark, but a collection of thoughts that seem to mean something if only you can figure out the golden thread that links it all together.
This easily spirals into the chaotic middle ground, where ideas collide and fight for attention like kids in a candy store.
Creative Storm
This is when the magic happens, but it can also get a little messy.
You might find yourself frantically scribbling in a notebook, fingers flying over your keyboard, just as if you’re trying to contain a lightning bolt in a bottle before it breaks free. Mood boards overflowing with sticky notes and unexpected discoveries at strange hours of the night are all part of this chaotic process. Which is why digital help isn’t a luxury, but a must-have.
Making voice notes a new habit could be your next genius move when a creative storm is brewing.
Kill Your Babies
The challenging part is to now transform those developing ideas into something concrete.
This is where discipline and creativity clash, where you must tame the wild stallions of imagination and guide them into an organized creation. It’s a game of love and despair. But you’ve got to keep your objective in bull’s eye focus.
Everything else must be slashed.
For another time. Or never to be seen. That’s the truth about the work you do. Every creative has a graveyard of ideas that once were, but never lived to see the light of day.
Lemonade
The thing about the creative process is that it loves the unexpected.
Happy accidents or desperate moments have produced some of our best ideas. Like the time I spilled paint on a sketch and turned it into an abstract masterpiece… or so I’d like to think. Sometimes you just have to go along for the ride when it comes to creativity because it’s a beast that won’t be tamed.
Are We Done Yet?
Eventually, somewhere, sometime, you or someone will give their approval, and blow the final whistle. At last, there’s the wonderful feeling of finishing something. The excitement of witnessing your idea come to life is unmatched, whether it’s publishing the blog post you’ve been working on for days, showing the world your most recent work of art, or that ad campaign going live.
It’s a moment of relief and pride knowing that you’ve accomplished something special despite all the challenges and fears.
And sadly, that’s what you have- a moment.
Because the creative process is never fully completed. It’s an ongoing cycle with new challenges and lessons learned on each journey. As creators, we are continuously developing, sharpening our skills, and expanding the realm of the possible.
Enjoy the Journey
Remember to enjoy the process.
Appreciate the moments of clarity, and don’t be afraid to go wherever your imagination leads. Buckle up, enjoy the trip, and let your creativity fly because the creative process is just as much about the journey as it is about the goal.
